How to Help Your Child Do Well for PSLE Oral (When Asked About Feelings)

Many students struggle with PSLE Oral Communication, especially when they are asked:

👉 “How do you think the people in the picture are feeling?”

They often:

  • describe what they see without inference

  • give very short answers

  • repeat the same idea

What they actually need is a clear way to organise their response.

At Grace Learning Academy (GLA), we guide students using this approach:

👉 State – Visual – Gestural – Spatial – Conclusion

⚠️ This structure is specifically useful for questions that focus on feelings or emotions.

📚 What Students Should Look Out For

🟡 State

Start by identifying the overall feeling and briefly describe the situation.

đź‘€ Visual

Focus on facial expressions first, then what the person is looking at or holding.

🧍‍♂️ Gestural

Look at body language and actions.

📍 Spatial

Observe how people are positioned and whether they are interacting.

🔵 Conclusion

End with a clear overall interpretation of the situation.

🌟 Let’s Take a Look at This Picture

State: The students seem to feel absorbed and disengaged from one another. This can be seen from the way they are sitting together but not interacting at all.

Visual Clues: From the picture, their facial expressions are serious and focused, with their eyes directed downwards at their phones. None of them are smiling or making eye contact. This suggests that their attention is fully on their devices rather than on the people around them.

Gestural Clues: Their body language shows that they are leaning forward slightly and holding their phones closely. They are not speaking or reacting to one another. This indicates that they are deeply engaged in their individual activities.

Spatial Clues: They are seated closely together at the same table, which would usually suggest social interaction. However, despite being near one another, they are not communicating at all. This suggests that although they are physically close, they are socially distant.

Conclusion: Therefore, the students are likely absorbed in their own digital activities rather than engaging with one another. This shows a negative situation where technology may be affecting their ability to communicate and build relationships.

đź’ˇ Why This Matters for PSLE

When students are asked about feelings, examiners are looking for:

  • clear inference

  • strong supporting evidence

  • logical explanation

Using this structure helps students:

âś” stay organised

âś” speak for longer

âś” avoid vague answers
