Question: How far do you agree that it is the responsibility of the individual to protect our environment?

Points for Discussion

1. individuals have the moral obligation to protect the natural world which we came from

Example: Such individual effort may come in the form of reducing, reusing and recycling waste in the home, to following existing policies and practices implemented by the government to promote conservation: water rationing, ‘bring your own bag’ day

Elaboration: individuals have the collective responsibility to care for our environment. In addition, ease with which individuals today communicate through the Internet makes the individual opinion a powerful voice in media landscapes. e.g. Greta Thunberg, youth environmental activist

2. Corporations play a huge role in the sustainability of our environment

Example: Starbucks has introduced compostable straws made from plant starch. When consumers bring their own mug or tumbler, they will get a 50 cents discount off their favourite drink.

Elaboration: The ability to influence employees and clients toward environmental protection, making them as equally important of power and influence over public opinion on eco-conservation. Such businesses may choose to produce eco-friendly products, sell such products at concessional rates, introduced eco-friendly practices in the workplace and industrial processes.

3. Governments are the ideal major players of environmental protection

Example: Under Singapore's Climate Action Plan, the carbon tax is set at a rate of $5 per tonne of GHG emissions (tCO2e) from 2019 to 2023. This encourages businesses to be more energy efficient and motivate them to support more green actions.

Elaboration: Governments possess both the political will and dollar to fund eco-conservation initiatives. Governments also have the ability to forge internationally binding agreements to protect the environment and delay damage e.g. Paris Climate Agreement.
