Argumentative Essay: Science and Technology

Is Science and Technology our servant or master?

Science and Technology is our servant

Point: Science and Technology opens up multiple educational opportunities

Example: For instance, Miao is an app which utilises blockchain technology and AI-powered chatbots to helps students solve math questions. The platform is also able to suggest similar questions that the student can practice on to improve their understanding of math concepts.

Elaboration: Technology in education enables learners/students to adjust to their own pace of learning. Students who need extra time can spend more time going over exercises until they understand, whilst students who need less support can continue ahead. By using other resources such as video, audio and interactive learning, students have many different ways to learn. Teachers can find creative ways to teach their students in an engaging way. Technology has changed the learning environment so that learning is more hands-on.

Point: Science and Technology has allowed us to treat and diagnose diseases and illnesses

Example: Detecting lung cancer or strokes based on CT scans. Assessing the risk of sudden cardiac death or other heart diseases based on electrocardiograms and cardiac MRI images

Elaboration: Technology in medicine provide cheaper, faster and more effective solutions for diseases. technologies could win the battle for us against previously incurable diseases and could simply lead to healthier individuals living in healthier communities.

Science and Technology is our master

Point: Science and Technology has created echo chamber, which may result in prejudiced viewpoints

Example: The existence of echo chambers is prevalent on Facebook where the information on our Facebook feed is curated and presented to us by an algorithm seeking to maximise our engagement by only showing us things that it thinks we will like and respond to. The more we engage and respond, the better the algorithm gets at predicting what we will like. When it comes to news content and discussion of the news, this means we will increasingly only see material that's in line with our stated interests. This all merges into a single stream of information.

Elaboration: By participating in an echo chamber, people are able to seek out information that reinforces their existing views without encountering opposing views, potentially resulting in an unintended exercise in confirmation bias. Echo chambers may increase social and political polarization and extremism.

Point: Science and Technology has created a digital addiction

Example: The term NOMOPHOBIA or NO MObile PHone PhoBIA is used to describe a psychological condition when people have a fear of being detached from mobile phone connectivity.

Elaboration: Digital technologies, such as social networks, online shopping, and games, use a set of persuasive and motivational techniques to keep users returning. These include “scarcity” (a snap or status is only temporarily available, encouraging you to get online quickly); “social proof” (20,000 users retweeted an article so you should go online and read it); “personalisation” (your news feed is designed to filter and display news based on your interest); and “reciprocity” (invite more friends to get extra points, and once your friends are part of the network it becomes much more difficult for you or them to leave).
